Abstract

The tourism industry is an important component of Ukraine’s economy, contributing to employment, making a significant contribution to the country’s GDP, and serving as a key driver of the national socio-economic system as a whole. Despite the extremely serious challenges of recent years, the tourism sector demonstrates potential for recovery. Statistical analysis of the international activity indicators of tourism companies makes it possible to identify trends and assess the industry’s development prospects.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the international activities of Ukrainian travel companies based on the dynamics of exports and imports of services under the “Travel” item in 2005–2023, as well as to identify the main trends in the development of the domestic tourism industry.

Overall, during 2005–2023, the volume of service exports under the “Travel” item shows a steady decline. This is confirmed by the results of regression analysis, which describe the dynamics of service exports using a cubic regression model with a high coefficient of determination (r² = 0.717). At the same time, the import of services demonstrates a positive trend, which can also be described using a cubic regression model (r² = 0.907).

In addition, the analysis identified a significant impact of external shocks on both indicators, including the global financial and economic crisis of 2008–2009, the outbreak of hostilities in Eastern Ukraine in 2014, COVID-19, and the full-scale war in Ukraine. The dynamics of the balance of trade in services under the “Travel” item confirmed the catastrophic impact of military actions on Ukraine’s tourism sector.

The international activity of domestic tourism companies occurs under serious challenges, which is reflected in the exports and imports indicators of travel-related services. At the same time, Ukraine's tourism sector demonstrates growth potential and the capacity to adapt under crisis conditions.
